Global Issues Forum Basel 26 May 2009

The Global Economic Crisis:

Causes, Consequences and Cures

Öffentlicher Vortrag / Public Lecture

William R.  White

Dienstag/Tuesday  26. Mai 2009, 18:30 Uhr

WWZ Auditorium, Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät
Peter Merian-Weg 6, Universität Basel

Mr. William R. White, Chair of the Economic Development and Review Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. William R. White joined the Bank for International Settlements in 1994 and worked from 1995 until June 2008 as Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department.

Mr. White is known for holding independent economic viewpoints and being committed to them.  In the late 1990’s, and repeatedly since, he voiced alarm at the growth in international credit risk and the growing exposure of the United States and a number of other countries to a debt related deflation. Closely related, he has questioned the view of the US Federal Reserve that, while it was impossible to lean against credit “booms”, monetary policy could be used effectively to attenuate subsequent “busts”. Recent events seem to have validated Mr. White’s views. He has published widely and has made presentations all over the world.

The lecture will be held in English and promises to offer the audience opportunity for an exciting discussion. After the lecture, Mr. White will be pleased to answer questions.
